As South Kihei Road turns left and becomes Okolani Drive, we enter South Maui's most lavish planned resort area... Wailea. Pronouced, WHY-LAY-A. Take a tour of the five hotel lobbies. The Grand Wailea features Hawaiian bronze statuary, a lagoon with a thatched roof restaurant, a charming wedding chapel featuring colorful stained glass and a world-class spa.

Free Hula Show
A local favorite is the Wailea Marriott Outrigger. You'll want to wander their lobbies and meeting rooms to view rich Koa wood, scenic murals and 40s art deco. There's also a free hula show starting at 5:30 every night that you can watch from the pool bar restaurant downstairs.

A Many Carat Gem
In the center of Wailea is set a gem of a shopping center and a very large gem it is. The Shops at Wailea contain over 60 shops and is the art center for South Maui with nine art galleries. Where you can see not only Hawaiian artists, but Chigals. Every "WOW" Wednesday there's entertainment and the Art galleries host pupus and refreshments.

The Grande Dame
The Grand Wailea is the biggest resort in South Maui. As you drive to the entry there's Maui's Niagara Falls on your right, biggest manmade waterfall on Maui. It's very easy to get lost in The Grand Wailea's huge halls and lobbies. Be sure to walk through the garden and view its sinuous, continuous pool that travels through slides and pools and caves, meeting with a coral reef pool in the center of which is the restaurant Humuhumunukunukuapau'a.

See the Stars
The Four Seasons is one of the most expensive resorts on Maui. Its open air layout is spacious, yet comfortable. Its prime restaurant is world-famous Spago's. The Four Seasons is a good place for celebrity watching. Notable at the Four Seasons Resort is Mandalay, a stylish boutique for clothing and imported gifts. 874-5111

The moorish architecture of the Fairmount Kea Lani make it one of the most beautiful on Maui. It features not only rooms, but private suites with lanais looking to a panoramic ocean view.

Celtic Tigers

Our Irish Pub
Just after the Kea Lani look for the left turn to the Wailea Blue Course. Even if you don't golf, you must visit Mulligans on the Blue, South Maui's only Irish Pub and restaurant There's tasty "home cooking"... Irish Stew, Corned Beef and all the imported beers... in a fun atmosphere where you can shoot pool or play darts.


Lono - a Maui Star

Catch one of Maui's longtime stars, Lono, Wednesdays at Maui Coast Hotel's Tradewinds poolside or Sundays at the Renaissance Resort. Lono plays and sings his original South Maui songs. 879-4986

There's live entertainment every night, and on Sunday, learn to do the Irish Jig with partner, Ado Flynn's Irish band, The Celtic Tigers. "Mulligans is a great experience for the whole family," says partner Mike O'Dwyer.

Mulligans is the clubhouse for the Wailea Blue Course, home of the Senior Skins Game where Jack and Arnie and Hale have it out in October.

Continue up the hill for one of the best ocean views of Maui from the Diamond Resort.Walk down the path below the restaurant to see the fabulous multiple waterfalls flowing under the building. The gazebo overlooking the ocean is a favorite wedding spot providing the perfect setting for wedding photography.

A Romantic Dinner Spot
The Diamond Resort's upscale view restaurant is Capische. There's a charming castle-like bar area and lanai seating for dinner.

Come down from the mountain and continue south to the turnoff for the Wailea Gold & Emerald Courses. These are favorites of Maui's PGA Pros. Here you'll find not only great golf but spectacular ocean views, too.
