Kihei is pronounced “key-hay”. The Hawaiian meaning is cape. Average rain fall is less than 6 inches (30cm) annually. The wind picks up about 11 am and lasts till around 6 pm. South Maui has more beaches than anywhere else in Hawaii and they are all public. Molokini is three miles off South Maui's shore... a must for divers.

Speaking Da Kine
Kane for man and Wahine for woman. Child is Keiki, Ku'uipo is sweetheart. A Mele is a song or chant, Ohana means family and Hale is home. An Imu is an underground oven used for Luau. Kau kau is food, Ono is delicious. And while a Pupu is an appetizer, Opala is garbage. Makai is ocean side and Mauka is toward the mountain or inland. Paniolo is a cowboy, Puka a hole or opening. Akami is smart/clever, Ali'i is ancient Hawaiian royalty, Kahuna is a priest or expert, Kapu is forbidden/taboo. Kama'aina is native-born with generations in Hawaii and a Haole is a foreigner. Shaka is the Hawaiian index and pinky finger salute and Brah is how you greet your buddy... “Howzit, Brah.” Da Kine replaces that elusive name on the tip of your tongue, "er… you know." Aloha is not only a warmly expressed hello or goodbye, but a general attitude of warmth, sharing and good wiil. Pau is finished - done. Mahalo... thank you.

Ahi is Tuna, Shutome is Swordfish, Opah is Moonfish, Uku is Gray Snapper, Mahi-mahi is Dolphin Fish, Onaga is Longtail Snapper and Ono is Wahoo and delicious too.

The Humpback Whale “song” is made up of short strung phases lasting 15 minutes and travel hundreds of miles underwater. The female’s gestation period is about 11˝ months. A newborn weighs almost 2 tons, is about 13 feet long and drinks 100 gallons of mother’s milk, containing 40 to 50% fat, per day. Whale’s tail markings are used to identify them.
